Anything that is not sustainable is TERMINAL. The concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide surged past 420 parts per million for the first time in recorded history this past weekend, according to a measurement taken at the Mauna Loa Observatory on the Big Island of Hawaii.
When the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) research station “began collecting CO2 measurements in the late 1950s, atmospheric CO2 concentration sat at around 315 PPM,” the Washington Post reported. “On Saturday, the daily average was pegged at 421.21 PPM—the first time in human history that number has been so high.”
While the growing concentration of atmospheric CO2—which increases the global average temperature and the number and severity of extreme weather events—is a long-term trend that corresponds with the rise of fossil fuel-powered capitalism, it has accelerated particularly rapidly since the 1970s.‘

Carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere reaches record high, researchers say
On May 14, the daily concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere hit the highest level ever recorded in human history, at 415 parts per million.
Methane is an especially potent greenhouse gas and global average concentrations of methane in 2018 reached 1,869 parts per billion, a 259 percent increase over pre-industrial levels.
Nitrous oxide, which is emitted from agricultural and industrial activities, is the third-most potent greenhouse gas and depletes the ozone layer that shields the planet from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation.
Atmospheric concentrations of nitrous oxide — a chemical compound commonly known as laughing gas — in 2018 reached an average of 331.1 parts per billion, which was a 123 percent increase over pre-industrial levels.

A massive 1 billion tons of CO2 were released during the PETM period each year. The PETM CO2 release period lasted about 4,000 years, which created the condition of an ice free Earth and tropical plants growing on both poles, plus ocean waters at the poles warming to 20 C. Ocean temperatures at the equator reached 30 C, as hot as a hot tub, which made conditions for life unbearable at this latitude. Oceans also turned acid, which meant most calcium shell life forms died out.
By comparison, humans are currently releasing over 29-50 BILLION TONS of CO2 each year (2014), and that is ignoring the other global warming gases such as methane and nitrous oxide. Here is the comparison of what happened back then to today. No wonder things are accelerating as far as global warming goes. It took thousands of years during the PETM period for the planet to warm up as much as it has in just one brief century today.

Earth’s carbon dioxide levels are likely the highest they’ve been in 15 million years
Direct measures of the air show carbon dioxide levels have recently hit 410 parts per million, or ppm, the highest-recorded number in human history.
“For the most part, carbon dioxide was below 400 ppm for the last 14 million years or so,” Matthew Lachniet, a paleoclimatologist at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, said in an interview.

There may have been a time, roughly 3 million years ago during an extremely warm period called the Pliocene Epoch — when sea levels were between 16 and 131 feet higher than today — during which carbon concentrations could have approximated present levels.
“However, the concentration of CO2 currently in Earth’s atmosphere is higher or is nearly as high as it has been over any time period during the past 15 million years,” Daniel Breecker, a paleoclimatologist at the University of Texas at Austin Jackson School of Geosciences, said over email.

They predict greenhouse gas emissions to occur according to the IPCC's worst-case scenario, as CO2 concentration in the atmosphere reaches 500 ppm in the 21st century.

Humans are emitting around 29 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere per year. (2012) Around 43% remains in the atmosphere - this is called the 'airborne fraction'. The rest is absorbed by vegetation and the oceans. While there are questions over how much the airborne fraction is increasing, it is clear that the total amount of CO2 in the atmosphere is increasing dramatically. Current CO2 levels are the highest in 15 million years.
Knorr 2009 extends this analysis back to 1850 by combining direct CO2 measurements from Mauna Loa and the South Pole with CO2 data derived from Antarctic ice cores. This enabled Knorr to compare CO2 emissions to atmospheric CO2 levels for the past 150 years.

Whatever carbon based fuel a person is burning, the formula is more or less the same; one gallon 6 pounds of 'fuel' in the form of oil, coal, wood, gasoline, diesel or ethanol turns into 20 pounds of CO2. Because CO2 is an 'insulating' gas, it keeps heat from escaping the planet, which is much like putting on a heavy insulating blanket inside of a sauna that is set to 104 degrees.

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center; Global emissions of carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels are rose again in 2013, reaching a record high of 36 billion tonnes, according to the Global Carbon Project.
The 2.1 percent rise for 2013 means global emissions from burning fossil fuel are 61 percent above 1990 levels, the baseline year for the Kyoto Protocol.
The Global Carbon Budget reveals that the biggest contributors to fossil fuel emissions in 2012 were China (27 percent), the US (14 percent), the EU (10 percent), and India (6 percent). The rise for 2013 comes after a similar rise of 2.2 percent in 2012.
The rise in fossil fuel emissions in 2012 and 2013 was slower compared to the average 2.7 percent of the past 10 years. Growth rates in CO2 for major emitting countries in 2012 were China (5.9 percent) and India (7.7 percent). The significance of human mastery of fire in terms of the consequences of enhanced entropy [23] has been underestimated. Human respiration dissipates 2 to 10 calories/minute, a camp fire releases approximately 180,000 Calories/minute, but the output of a 1000 megawatt/hour power plant expends some 2.4 billion calories/minute and nuclear fission orders of magnitude higher, with an increase in entropy on the scale of large geological events.
While complexity increases in conurbations, the rise in atmospheric energy/heat due to the release of greenhouse gases associated with exothermic combustion results in droughts, floods and storms, degrading natural habitats.
It is unthinkable that that a civilization which placed a man on the moon and explored the solar system cannot find the will to protect its own planet. No human tribal, national, religious faith or political system appears to be able to resolve the climate crisis, nor can the rationale of ongoing $trillions-scale wars around the globe, which can only culminate in nuclear war, amount to more than a suicide pact.

2018 SUMMARY FOR GLOBAL CO2 EMISSIONS AND GOALS
In summary, global warming is still accelerating, although the trend is in the right direction in several countries, towards a slower expansion or even a reversal in terms of using carbon fuels. Will we be able to reverse this trend before the tipping point is reached and methane ice deposits release massive amounts of methane that accelerate massive global warming into an extinction level event?
Time will tell, but some climate scientists give humanity only 1 in 100 chance of making it. So far, humans seem to be on the path of committing global suicide due to pressures imposed by short term, profit motivated carbon and nuclear fuel monopolies as well as the individual choices made by billions of people to continue burning carbon fuels and using nuclear power as their primary energy source.
